Rose, Dametria’s grandmother, was everything: A friend to the community, a confidant, an overall great soul. Dametria would spend most of her childhood at her grandmother’s apartment complex, building an inseparable bond that lasted until her passing.
“This is me as an infant, like 4 months or less in this picture. And this is my grandma and my brother in her apartment. She practically raised me..by 3 I was over there nearly full-time. She used to be wild, party goer and party thrower, drinker and smoker, and then eventually got saved and became a god fearing woman. We went to church every Sunday and Wednesday…She was a classic grandma. She took care of everybody on the block. If it was your birthday, she was going to make you cake, she didn’t care who you was. She would make a plate for the Jehovah Witness people; she took care of them…I was kinda bad as a kid, I would leave the block sometimes even tho I knew I wasn’t supposed to and she was be walking down the street calling my name, it was so embarrassing but now I understand why. I miss her.”
