“Some of everyone” knew Mrs. Skanes in the Ensley community. She was a teacher in the Birmingham City Schools system & a mentor to plenty of youth in Ensley, taking the initiative forge bonds with kids; she loved them. Manuel and Miguel both look back fondly at their time with her, seeing as a positive influence in her life.

From Miguel: “She went to my mom and she said “I’m going to start taking him to church with me” and I eventually started going. She loved kids and she would always gather them and take them to church in this little green car. Me and my brother stuck with her the longest.
