About The Gallery
The Ensley Childhood Project (ECP) is a gallery based on the homemade photos, videos, and personal narratives of the residents of Ensley, a neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama. Through the use of their personal artifacts and collective memory, a non-linear timeline is created to explain the history of the community.
The ECP was a 1.5 year undertaking by first time curator Timothy Quarshie, a Birmingham resident. Timothy initally enlisted the help of Jahman Hill, the Executive Director of The Flourish Alabama (an arts non-profit located in Ensley) and later gained the support of Renew Birmingham as well as funding from The Alabama State Council of the Arts & Alabama Humanities Alliance. During this time period, Timothy interviewed 20+ residents and community residents. As of today, the ECP has been displayed twice, both on the 600 block of 19th Street Ensley, which serves as the upcoming Black Arts District.. The Ensley Childhood Project will be on display at Birmingham Public Library in May 2026.
