What Aldrich remembers the most about elementary school was the already formed bond with the band director at Councill. He and his siblings they took lessons from him even before they stepped foot in school.
Originally named Davis school after Alfred Davis, the school would change its name to Councill Negro Elementary School to honor William Councill who served as the founder and first president of A&M college (now known as Alabama A&M) (“Negro” was later dropped from the name). The school served students from 1926 – 2012.
