As a high school student, Nichole would spend her days after school working at her mother’s salon. Her mom had three different shops, including one near Erskine Hawkins Park (Note: This photo was taken at the salon on Bush Blvd in Bush Hills.) She worked there unofficially; she did not have a license so she helped wash, unroll, and prep.

Entrepreneurship was a common attribute for Ensley residents, which came from the mindset of “getting it out of the mud”. Having your own business, having multiple sources of income was seen as a necessity in order to provide yourself and your family.
